Ultradian Focus Cycle
A focus session template based on ultradian rhythms — your brain's natural 90-minute energy cycles. Align work intensity with biology for sustainable productivity.
Your brain operates in 90-minute cycles of high and low alertness called ultradian rhythms. This template aligns your work with these natural cycles: 90 minutes of peak-intensity focus followed by a 20-minute genuine recovery period. Instead of fighting your biology with caffeine and willpower, you work with it.
When to use this template
Use this template when you want a more natural, sustainable productivity rhythm than strict Pomodoro, when you have the flexibility to take 20-minute breaks, or when you notice your energy follows a clear 90-minute pattern.
Standard Ultradian Cycle (90/20)
One complete ultradian cycle: 90 minutes of focused work followed by a 20-minute active recovery. Repeat 3-4 times per day.
Steps
- 1Notice your current energy level. Ideally, start a cycle when you feel alert and clear
- 2Block all distractions with Deepdoro
- 3Start a 25-minute pomodoro as your warm-up phase
- 4At 25 minutes: enter flow mode. This is where the cycle really begins
- 5Continue in flow mode for the next 60-65 minutes (total ~90 min)
- 6At 90 minutes: stop, even if you feel you could continue. Respect the cycle
- 7Take a full 20-minute recovery: walk outside, stretch, meditate, or do a physical activity
- 8DO NOT check email, social media, or screens during recovery
- 9After 20 minutes: you should feel a natural energy lift. Start the next cycle
Pomodoro-Stacked Ultradian (3x25 + 20)
For those who prefer Pomodoro structure within the 90-minute cycle. Three pomodoros with micro-breaks, then a full 20-minute recovery.
Steps
- 1Pomodoro 1 (25 min): Warm-up work. Get into the task
- 2Micro-break (3 min): Quick stretch, water. Don't check messages
- 3Pomodoro 2 (25 min): Peak focus. This is usually the most productive interval
- 4Micro-break (3 min): Brief movement
- 5Pomodoro 3 (25 min): Sustained work or flow continuation from previous pomodoro
- 6Full recovery break (20 min): Walk, exercise, or complete mental disconnect
- 7Total cycle: ~100 minutes including breaks. Close to one ultradian phase
Implementation Tips
- The 20-minute recovery is not optional — skipping it degrades the next cycle's quality
- Physical movement during recovery is more restorative than passive rest
- You'll get 3-4 good ultradian cycles per day. Don't force a 5th
- If you feel foggy at the start of a cycle, you may be in a rest phase — wait 15 minutes or do light work
- Track which cycles are most productive. Most people peak in their first two morning cycles
- Caffeine can mask the rest phase but doesn't eliminate it — the next cycle will be weaker
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 90 minutes exact?
No — ultradian cycles range from 75-120 minutes depending on the person. 90 minutes is an average. Pay attention to when you naturally feel a dip in energy and adjust your cycle length accordingly.
Can I do ultradian cycles with meetings in between?
Ideally, schedule meetings during natural rest phases. If that's not possible, use shorter focus blocks (60 min) between meetings and take recovery when your schedule allows.
How is this different from regular Pomodoro?
Standard Pomodoro uses 25/5 intervals regardless of your energy state. The ultradian approach aligns with your biology — you work intensely during peak phases and rest deeply during recovery phases. It's more sustainable for all-day productivity.
